Professor Louis Chauvin

IMG_8850Dr. Chauvin joined the Faculty in January 1994 to teach Ethics in Management at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has also taught Strategies in Sustainable Development and now teaches Business and Society and a new core course, The Social Context of Business, that he designed with Prof. Nelson Phillips. Dr. Chauvin has also taught ethics courses at the University of Sherbrooke and at Concordia University. From 1991 to 1993 he was editor of the Journal of Religion and Culture at Concordia University.

Prior to undertaking an academic career, Dr. Chauvin spent nearly 20 years in the insurance industry in positions ranging from sales, to executive vice-president of a software company that specialized in insurance broker software. He also started a few other business ventures that are now operating under new management.

His research interests have ranged from biomedical ethics to the role of human resources brokers in establishing trust as workplace relationships evolve. He was also involved in research on inter-organizational collaboration with Cynthia Hardy and Nelson Phillips. He participated in the publication of two monographs: one on ethics by Prof. Fred Bird of Concordia University, and another one by Dr. David Roy, Director of the Ethics Center of the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal. His present research centres on individuals and organisations that articulate a critique of the current capitalist/globalisation paradigm and the alternatives they propose.

Dr. Chauvin was the recipient of an SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship 1992-94 and the J.W. McConnell Memorial Graduate Fellowship 1992-1994. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Le Réseau Québécois pour la Simplicité Volontaire an organisation that studies, develops and promotes the concept of Voluntary Simplicity.

He will be speaking about Happiness and Mindful Living at this year’s Conference.
